Trucking Coil Racks for Steel Coils

in Equipment Check

Trucking coil racks are used when hauling coils of steel on a flatbed or similar platform trailer. Coils can range in size from something relatively small like 5,000 lbs to over 60,000 lbs. Trucking coil racks are designed to hold the steel coils off the bed of the trailer.coil rack placement The coil rack itself doesn’t secure the coil to the trailer, that is the function of the chains. Rubber mats are also used in various points to create friction that helps prevent items from shifting, like the coil racks.

Styles of Loading

Coils can be loaded in the following ways:
1. where the eye of the coil is facing forward, also called shotgun
2. the eye of the coil can be facing the side of the trailer, commonly called suicide or
3. the eye of the coil is facing up pointing to the sky.

Coil racks only come into play when loading a coil in the eye facing forward or to the side position. The direction a coil is loaded is determined by the shipper but generally speaking it is determined on how the coil is loaded or will be unloaded at the consignee by either an overhead crane or a forklift from the side.coil rack

  1. Lie down rubber mats
  2. Coil racks sit on the rubber mats
  3. Place lumber on coil rack.
  4. Use waterproof paper and edge protectors where needed.
  5. Secure chains according to specifications
